Today we talk to Gilbert Keino, an enterprising student whose passion for cycling and scouting could not stop him from vending boiled eggs. Here is his story.
Gilbert Kipngeno Keino, a student at Koitaleel Samoei University College, is a remarkable individual whose journey from a local primary school in Kericho to pursuing a Degree in Education Arts, English, and Literature is a testament to his determination. Despite financial hurdles, he completed his KCPE in 2016 and enrolled in Kaitui High School as a day scholar.
From a young age, Gilbert’s passion for community involvement and leadership was evident. As an Adventist, he took on the role of a Master Guide, assuming the responsibility of guiding and mentoring youth in his society. Through this program, he gained valuable skills that not only helped him overcome life’s challenges but also brought young people closer to their faith.
Scouting played a pivotal role in Gilbert’s development as a leader. Starting as a Junior Scout in Class 6 at Borborwet Primary School, he continued his scouting journey into high school, becoming a Senior Scout at Kaitui High School. Throughout his high school years, he exhibited his leadership abilities as a Patrol Leader. In college, he progressed to Rovers and joined the Nandi County Open Crew, aiming to take on more significant roles in the Kenyan scouting community.
Beyond his leadership and community involvement, Gilbert embraced his entrepreneurial spirit during college. Recognizing opportunities around Mosoriot, he ventured into selling boiled eggs and smokies, capitalizing on the location’s advantages. His business is thriving, generating daily profits of 500 to 1500 shillings. This income has alleviated financial burdens on his single-parent household. He meets his needs.
Gilbert is also an avid sportsman whose passion for cycling is incomparable. Despite his busy schedule, he finds time to jump on the saddle and press the pedals to wherever his spirit leads him. He has cycled several trips between his home in Kericho and Mosoriot. He once dared to ride all the way from Mosoriot to Naivasha during one of his scouting trips to Nairobi. He has also participated in a number of cycling competitions and is looking forward to winning some in future.
Managing academics, business, and cycling is no easy feat, but Gilbert’s effective planning and time management enables him to excel in each pursuit. He urges fellow students to maximize their college experience by exploring their passions. Gilbert firmly believes that engaging in productive activities, whether business or otherwise, could catalyze trans formative changes in one’s life.
Gilbert Kipngeno Keino’s journey is an inspiring example of how embracing passion, purpose, and effective time management can lead to personal growth and success. His dedication to leadership, community involvement, entrepreneurship, and balancing multiple interests serves as an inspiration to all.
